The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has recently made changes to the LL.B. degree program. Here’s what you need to know:
New Duration for LL.B.
- Five-Year Program: Starting now, the LL.B. degree will be awarded after five years of study. Previously, it was awarded after three years.
- Discontinuation of Three-Year Program: The three-year LL.B. program is no longer available. Students currently enrolled in this program will need to complete it within five years.
Admission Policy
- Current Students: If you are already enrolled in the three-year LL.B. program, you must continue and finish your course within five years.
- No New Admissions: New admissions to the three-year LL.B. program are not allowed.
Class Timings and Enrollment
- Morning Sessions Only: Only morning classes will be permitted. Evening and afternoon classes are no longer allowed for new admissions, though existing classes can continue.
- First-Year Enrollment Limit: Each institution can admit a maximum of 100 students into the first year of the LL.B. program.
Regulations for Law Colleges
- Approval Required: Universities and law colleges must get approval from the PBC and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to offer postgraduate legal education.
- Syllabus Approval: Institutions must have their syllabus approved by the PBC and HEC.
- Affiliations: Degree-awarding institutions must ensure their affiliated private law colleges follow the rules.
- Distance Learning: Institutions offering distance learning programs need to obtain a No-Objection Certificate (NoC) from the PBC.
My View
These changes by the PBC are expected to improve the quality of legal education in Pakistan. Extending the LL.B. program to five years will provide students with more practical experience, helping them become more skilled and qualified lawyers.
