Abdul Sattar Edhi is often called Pakistan’s “Mother Teresa.” He started his charitable work in a small 8 by 8 room and asked for donations across Pakistan. With just Rs 5,000, he launched the Edhi Trust, which later became known as the Balqees Edhi Trust.

Early Life and Achievements

Edhi’s Edhi Foundation is famous for its large ambulance service, operating 1,500 ambulances. He was a saintly figure who believed that despite education, people still needed to embrace true humanity. In 1989, he received the Nishan-e-Imtiaz award and was named Person of the Year by Express Tribune.

Even as his health declined and he needed dialysis in 2013 due to kidney failure, Edhi continued his work. He passed away at 88 and donated his eyes before he died. He was buried in Edhi Village.

Edhi was known for his simplicity and dedication. He lived in a modest, windowless room attached to his foundation’s office, with just a bed and a sink.
